2019: The Year Of Return

2019: The Year Of Return

In August 1619, a ship carrying African slaves arrived at Point Comfort in the British colony of Virginia — what is now a part of our modern United States. Over 20 enslaved Africans on the ship were sold, and with that, American slavery was born.

Ghana has designated 2019 as the 'Year of Return' to commemorate 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia in the United States.

This historic moment and campaign is about reconnecting descendants of the African diaspora with the continent.

In recent years, African Americans in particular and South Americans have used DNA testing to trace their ancestry and through their discoveries have made journeys back home to the countries of origin. Some have even taken up citizenship of these countries as they believe they have finally discovered who they are.

Did you know that efforts in spreading this movement include international celebrities like Idris Elba, Boris Kodjoe, Naomi Campbell, and over 30 Ghanaian celebrities ?
